As a part of the Universities Against Corruption initiative, the Jordan Transparency Center’s Transparency Knights held an interactive discussion session with Jumana Ghunaimat, a journalist and former Minister of State for Media Affairs. The topic was the reality of the state of social communication, as well as hopes for its future.
The meeting started with a speech by JTC’s CEO, Hilda Ajeilat, who welcomed Ghunaimat and thanked her for accepting the invitation. She touched on previous meetings the Center had held with various officials and experts in order to enhance communication between Jordanian youth and existing institutions. In turn, Ghunaimat began with an introduction to the concept of social communication, it’s impact on decision making, and it’s importance in politics. She discussed her experience working with media and politics, asserting that media has a great impact on societal awareness and knowledge is a catalyst for change. She shared that she is passionate about getting youth to engage with and learn about the media because of its ability to enhance access to information.
During this conversation, moderated by Fawaz Al-Shobaki, Esquire, the Knights brought up various questions, ideas, and suggestions to Ghunaimat, or which she responded, drawing on her wealth of experience. She concluded with a reminder to the present youth that “Freedom of expression is a matter guaranteed by the Jordanian constitution.”
